Duties and The Executive Director is the senior business officer
Responsibilities of the Helena Symphony. The Executive Director is
responsible for implementing, guiding and administering programs and operations of the Symphony in accordance with the Symphony mission at the general direction of the Board.
The Executive Director will manage the daily business operations of the Symphony, providing leadership and effective management of the symphony’s administrative team (Box Office, administrative assistant, graphic artist, staff photographer, web manager and volunteers.)
The Executive Director will establish and maintain positive relationships with the communities served by the Symphony and, working with the Music Director and the Board, help to market and promote the Helena Symphony.
Working with the Music Director, the Executive Director will develop budgets for the approval of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will manage daily finances.
Requirements: The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and
organizational skills with an understanding of the special needs of nonprofit organizations in general and symphony organizations in particular.
Those skills include: Leadership ability, including human resource management skills. A successful track record in organizational development and financial management. Past success in fundraising, including preparing successful proposals to corporations and foundations. Effective marketing ability to promote the Helena Symphony’s performances and other activities. Strong writing and oral communication skills, including public speaking. Computer literacy and knowledge of commonly used business programs. Creativity in presenting ideas and accepting suggestions to attract new donors and audience members, and build community partnerships. A commitment to being an active and visible participant in the community.
The successful candidate must also be able to pass security and credit checks.

Description: Currently in its 53rd season, the Helena Symphony, under
the artistic direction of Maestro Allan R. Scott, includes a more than $500,000 and an 88 member orchestra working under a collective bargaining agreement and 100-voice symphonic chorus. The City of Helena, Montana’s state capital has been ranked as one of the most notable arts community in the country and maintains the largest performance hall in the state (2,100 seat Helena Civic Center). Helena also offers auxiliary venues such as the renowned Gothic styled Cathedral of St. Helena and the campus of Carroll College, the symphony’s summer home.
Performing for 1,000-1,200 people a month and over 25,000 people a year, the Helena Symphony performs 6-8 subscription concerts (including an Opening Night, a 5-6 concert classical series, a fully staged opera, and an annual Mahler Celebration), and 3-4 non-subscription concerts (including the summer Symphony Under the Stars – a free concert for 12,000 plus audience, annual Nutcracker performances, Handel’s Messiah, and Youth Concert).
The Helena Symphony is overseen by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. In addition to the administrative staff under the Executive Director, the symphony has a three-member artistic staff (Maestro Scott as Music Director, Chorale Director and Accompanist), and a six-member artistic support staff overseen by the Music Director (Executive Assistant, Chorale Manager, Orchestra Librarian, Director of Artistic Planning and Operations Manager).
Beginning with the 2003-2004 Season, Philadelphia Conductor Allan R. Scott was appointed the 14th Music Director of the Helena Symphony. Since his appointment, Maestro Scott’s programming and commitment has tripled season subscriptions and doubled single ticket sales. Maestro Scott attracts nationally recognized guest artists to perform with the Helena Symphony. His leadership has resulted in several new programs, including the Pre-Concert Conductor’s Crash Courses, an annual Evening at the Opera, an annual Mahler Celebration, collaboration with Queen City Ballet for The Nutcracker and the summer outdoor concert Symphony Under the Stars.
The Helena Symphony is a member of the League of American Orchestras and Montana Association of Symphony Orchestras.
