A beloved holiday tradition returns to Helena on Monday 13 December 2021! The Helena Symphony is happy to present two performances of Christmas in the Cathedral at the Cathedral of St. Helena this year. Usher in the season with Helena’s longest and greatest holiday tradition with an evening of lessons and carols – all in the profoundly reflective Cathedral of St. Helena. Christmas in the Cathedral will be presented thanks to the generosity of our sponsors: Touchmark Helena, Connie & Ron Bergum, and the Carolina Bed & Breakfast.

Step into the ethereal space of the Cathedral of St. Helena and find a sense of peace and tranquility through an evening of poetry and music. Tickets are on sale now for both the 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. performances of Christmas in the Cathedral!

CHRISTMAS IN THE CATHEDRAL

“The Christmas and special holiday season begins in Helena with the Symphony’s Christmas in the Cathedral,” explains Director of Patron Services Scott Kall. “This special performance has taken place every year for nearly 50 Seasons of the Helena Symphony, and we are excited to bring the unique magic, and the artistic and spiritual brilliance of Christmas in the Cathedral back into our community.”

Based on the tradition of lessons and carols, Maestro Allan R. Scott has created a program of poetry and music to evoke a sense of peace, tranquility, and community. “From music of Bach to living composers, the concert is centered on a human sense of finding peace through unrest. This concert is about remembering that we exist as humanity together and it is about finding the common denominator, that we all want to live in a peaceful world, we all want to be together, and we all want to find things we have in common. All of us want something better for ourselves, not just here, but whatever happens afterwards.”

Christmas in the Cathedral will feature the well-known German Christmas carol Still, Still, Still. It is a carol that captures the beauty found in still moments and encourages the listener to stop, reflect, and exist with contentment in a moment of silence. Similar emotions are evoked in another carol to be performed, In the Bleak Midwinter.

What is Peace and Even When He is Silent by living composer Kim André Arnesen evoke the need to strive for peace, and that peace is something that must be achieved. These works are coupled with a poem by Maya Angelou, Amazing Peace: A Christmas Poem. Both the poem and pieces by Arnesen deal with themes of social unrest and political division separating humanity. As part of this concert of reflection, we are encouraged to come together as a community.

This is a concert perfect for the whole family on a Monday winter evening and is 70 minutes in duration without intermission.

SEASON 67 CONTINUES IN 2022

Highlights of Season 67 include Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky on Saturday, 26 March 2022. Indulge in Elgar’s profoundly expressive Cello Concerto with worldwide acclaimed Israeli-American Cellist Amit Peled. Then experience the music that caused a riot – the provocatively primitive and viscerally powerful Rite of Spring by Stravinsky.

Season 67 will conclude on Saturday, 30 April 2022 with the most popular opera of all time – Bizet’s Carmen. One of the most thrilling stories ever told, Carmen pulls us into a messy love triangle between a handsome soldier, sexy bullfighter, and the free-spirited gypsy seductress who is driven by her heart’s desires and makes men melt. Live dangerously and be tempted by one of the greatest female heroines ever – Carmen!

In addition to the substantial discounts on season tickets, subscribers also receive the new Bring A Friend Pass, The Art of Listening Newsletter, first access to Non-Series Concerts, and several other benefits.
